Guidelines for Mechanical Thrombectomy in Acute Ischemic Stroke: Insights from ESO and ESMINT
The Journal of NeuroInterventional Surgery provides guidelines from the European Stroke Organisation (ESO) and the European Society for Minimally Invasive Neurological Therapy (ESMINT) on the use of mechanical thrombectomy (MT) for acute ischemic stroke. MT is established as the standard of care for patients with large vessel occlusion (LVO)-related acute ischemic stroke. The guidelines emphasize the importance of selecting patients based on clinical and imaging characteristics to ensure the best outcomes. High-quality evidence supports the use of MT plus best medical management (BMM), including intravenous thrombolysis, within 6 hours of symptom onset. Moderate-quality evidence supports its use in the 6-24 hour window for eligible patients. The guidelines cover aspects of prehospital management, patient selection, and treatment modalities, including the use of anaesthesia during MT. [1]
